4 Tips from the Pros About Choosing Grout Color

Choosing a grout color can be challenging. Homeowners want it to look good, but they also want it to coordinate with the other colors in the room and not clash. Home remodelers are tasked with picking out a color that matches the homeowner’s vision for their space while still being visually appealing to others who will see it. This blog post is about four tips from pro home remodelers on how homeowners can choose grout color for their property!

One of the most critical aspects of your home’s design is its color. Homeowners often spend much time picking out paint colors, deciding on tile patterns, and agonizing over carpet shades. But there are other elements in your home that can also change the look and feel of the space- namely grout!

DCON’s bathroom remodeling and kitchen remodeling experts have put together some tips that will help you find the perfect grout color for your needs!

1. Consider the grout color when you’re picking out tile.

If you’re buying tile, it’s essential to consider the grout color used with those tiles. Homeowners often think of contrast- such as black and white or earth tones on a lighter background like gray. But these options can feel very clean and stark if they don’t have a warm tone mixed in there somewhere! It might make sense to find something more complementary than contrasting, so your space doesn’t seem too dark or cold overall.

Grout is sometimes seen as an afterthought because most people only notice it when the grout has turned brown from dirt buildup over time. However, this part of the design process shouldn’t be overlooked! Even small changes to grout color can drastically change the look and feel of the space, so it’s essential to consider the grout color used with those tiles.

2. Test different shades on tile samples rather than relying solely on computer screens.

One thing we always suggest is trying out different shades before committing to anything final. Home-improvement stores have small sample buckets for you to try out before investing in a larger amount of grout, which is great because it’s essential to test the color with light coming from above (natural lighting) and artificial lighting lights. It will be much harder to get an accurate impression of what that shade looks like if you only look it one way!

Grout color is one of the most overlooked aspects in Home Improvement projects, but it can make or break your space, so don’t forget to take some time and consider what you want! If you’re not sure where to start, there are a few considerations that need to be made: considering how much natural light will come through windows (and no matter which type of grout – white, black, gray), choosing between matte vs. glossy finishes, and deciding what color to go with.

3. Choose a grout color that complements your flooring and other fixtures in the room

Grout comes in a variety of shades, from light to dark and everything in between. It’s essential to consider the natural lighting that will be coming through windows when picking out grout color because you want it to pop with minimal effort on your part! This is very important if you’re planning any home renovation projects, such as replacing tiles or re-grouting existing ones. If not done correctly, there could end up being contrasting colors throughout your house, which can feel jarring over time.

Staying consistent with a color scheme is important because it will make for an easier time pairing different tile colors together, but don’t forget to consider how this might play out in other areas of your home, like cabinets or countertops. If you’re not going to be doing any amount of remodeling in those spaces, then at least go over what their current colors are so that you can have a better idea about how they’ll work within your overall design plan.

Also, if it’s difficult for you to decide between glossy vs. satin finishes because one may not work better with your overall design scheme or budget, then consider going over highlights of each – like adding some gloss here while keeping other parts neutrally matte. This way, there is less chance for contrast when natural lights are bouncing off the tiles.

4. Don’t select a grout color that’s too dark or light for your space

You can use a white or light gray matte finish, which will allow the natural light in your windows to have the most impact on that space. But be cautious if you’re using any dark tiles as they’ll absorb even more light into them than if you were using lighter colored ones.

If grout colors are starting to blend for you, then it might not hurt to go in with a lighter shade than what’s there – but on the other hand, if they seem too dark or too light, then that could have just as much (if not more) negative implications.

So one thing we recommend is that you go with a lighter shade, or at least try it before committing to anything final – but again, make sure the darker grout color isn’t too dark, and the light grout colors aren’t too light. Also, if there are any places where those tiles meet other surfaces like cabinets or countertops (which would have their own paint color), then using a different hue of grout can help create solid visual continuity without having an absurd number of colors all over your home in different shades.

These tips are worth considering next time your tiles need new grouting or when planning any other home renovation project so that the process goes smoothly and creates a beautiful space without hiccups along the way.
